Nov. 15 - Announcements & Meetings
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Congregational Meeting: You are invited to a meeting after worship today to hear about Sabbatical time for Gayle and the church from mid January through early April. We will make presentations about the concept of Sabbatical, our specific plans and how the church will function while Gayle is gone. Come with your questions and concerns, and we will attempt to answer them. The meeting will be held in the Sanctuary immediately following worship.
Communion Offering: In these hard economic times, our community needs our holiday help. The Deacons and Mission Committee have agreed to provide fourteen holiday baskets this Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Communion Offering for the month of November will go towards the purchase of turkeys and hams for each basket. There also is a sign-up sheet in Fellowship Hall for the other contents of the baskets. All items are due back by 9:00 am on Sunday, November 22. Thank you for your generosity. (Please note: when making checks to support Mission giving, make them payable to NCC, with Mission in the Memo section, so that the funds can be properly tracked and then allocated to that Mission.)
Help with Advent Children’s Messages: We are looking for a team of four who can present our Advent Children’s Messages. There is a prepared script and there is no need for rehearsal or talent. Please see Gayle if you might enjoy this.
Christmas Caroling Coordinator: Could you please assist us in organizing a Christmas Caroling party for the church? Contact Gayle if you are interested.
Town-wide Thanksgiving Service: There will be a town-wide Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, November 22 at 5:30pm at the Baptist Church. There will be a food in-gathering to benefit the Northwood Food Pantry. Even if you are unable to join us in Worship in the morning, come to the Town-wide Service.
Envisioning Survey: As we go about our Envisioning Process,
we are seeking to find out how well this church serves its parishioners. The surveys were sent out in the last newsletter and were sent electronically to those who receive the newsletter by email. Use as much room as you need to answer the questions, and we hope that everyone in the family will fill one out. There is a designated box for you to return the survey in the upstairs hall way, under the time line. Or they can be mailed to the church at PO Box 65, Northwood, NH 03261 or given to any committee member (Michael Magoon, Priscilla Merrill or Gayle Murphy.)

Study of Acts: We will continue our study of the Biblical book of Acts on Tuesday evenings at 5:30. This week we will focus on Chapters 21-24 and pay particular attention to the early Christian commitment to Jesus. Anyone can come at 5:00 for a brown bag dinner.

DEAR NORTHWOOD CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH MEMBERS AND FRIENDS:
The information below summarizes an upcoming mission opportunity and the results of our previous mission effort.
OCTOBER 2009 MISSION - STRAFFORD COUNTY HOMELESS SHELTER
The October Mission is the Strafford County Homeless Center in Rochester. SCHC is a local non-profit organization that has been operating for 10 years in a ranch style home donated by Waste Management. It is a cold shelter, meaning it is only opened from October through April for localhomeless families and single parents. Offering shelter, food, case management, love and support, its mission also links homeless individuals to community social services, employment opportunities, continued education, medical/legal services, drug and alcohol support services, and low-incomehousing possibilities. Funding for the Center is through local churches and private citizens, and relies on a volunteer-based staff pool. Your donations can be cash, supplies (i.e.: personal hygiene products, bedding, office supplies, ink cartridges, paper, postage stamps), or volunteer time for 5-6 hour shifts on weekends through the winter. Our own Jan Grande is the Shelter Director, so please contact her with any questions.
SEPTEMBER 2009 MISSION RESULTS - A LIGHT FOR ZIMBABWE & UCC UKAMA PARTNERSHIP
The Northwood Congregational Church membership and friends donated 9 boxes to "A Light forZimbabwe." In addition to personal donations of supplies, we purchased about $227 of items to supplement the shipments. As the attached photo shows, we collected and boxed 2 mountain bikes, medicine/first aid supplies/eyeglasses, library and text books, school supplies, paper, clothing, sewing items, and many other needed items. The boxes were delivered on October 2, 2009 to the gymnasium of New England Pentecostal Ministries in Pelham, NH (see photo of portion of boxes). These items will be put in a 40-foot long container box which will take about 8 weeks to arrive in Zimbabwe and hopefully all items will be distributed to their intended recipients by Christmas. Thanks to one particularly generous donor, we are also contributing $450 to "A Light for Zimbabwe" of which $150 is to be used for shipping and $300 to be used for other supplies for the Zamchiya Church and Mt. Selinda/Chikore Mission. We we also able to send a check for $510.87 to NH Council UCC to be distributed between Zamchiya Church and other designated UCCZ Ukama Partnershipchurches in Zimbabwe. We trust and pray that all these donations will be put to good use and reach their intended recipients. We are proud of what we have been able to do this year and thank the congregation for their generosity to meet the needs of our brothers and sisters in Zimbabwe for this important mission!

Aug 30, 2009 Announcements
Rally Day will be held on Sunday, September 13. This is the kick-off to our program year and the start of our Sunday School program. Plan to join us for this fun day of the gathering of the community after busy summers.
Special offerings for the month of August will be sent to the Rochester District Visiting Nurse Association. This is the organization that makes it possible for many of our Northwood neighbors to remain in the comfort of their own homes and receive the medical care that they need. What a welcome relief to people who would otherwise be required to enter a nursing home! Their Support Services Program also offers Personal Care Service Providers, Homemakers, Staff Companions and In Home Providers. For further information call 332-1133 or visit www.yourvna.org. The Rockingham Association of the United Church of Christ invites you to a day on Star Island, Saturday September 12 from 9:45-4:00. The Association has negotiated special ferry rates with a 33% discount off the normal ticket prices, $25.00/person, $10.00/child 6-12, under 6 free. We need the count and checks by August 31 which both go to Gregg Pitman (298 Harmony Road Northwood. . Come join fellow UCC’ers in meeting, worship, and a lovely day.
Save Saturday September 12 for a Lasagna Dinner and Show. We will be treated to a dinner of the Drown family famous lasagna, salad, and pie. After dinner there will be a show featuring Becky Rule and Maren Tirabassi. Tickets are $10.00 and the proceeds will go to fix the church’s front porch. There is also a sign-up for people to donate ingredients and their time setting up, cleaning up and serving.
Our children are tending a garden in summer Sunday School. We still need adults and youth to help our children. There will be a sign-up outside of Fellowship Hall for you to sign up for one Sunday during the summer to help. We also need someone who will put up a fence around the garden to keep our neighborly critters from eating all the fruits of the children’s work.
Centering prayer is silent and peaceful…where we offer our time as a love offering to God. It allows us to invite God’s presence and open ourselves to grow in relationship with God. The Centering prayer group meets Wednesday mornings at 8:00am at 11 Blaisdell Dr. The prayer time lasts 30 minutes. Anyone is welcome. If you have questions or need directions, speak with Mary Ann Lippincott 942.6070.

Neil English will be our Lay Preacher today. We’d like to thank not only Neil, but all our Musical Assistants, Lay Preachers and Lay Readers for making our services brighter with the gifts they bring to our Congregation!
Gayle Murphy is on vacation until August 11th. The Deacons will be on call for any emergencies and will check the phone daily. Please contact Jo Chase at 942.8940 or 545.4195 if there is an emergency and they will make sure you get the pastoral care you need.
Kat will be taking her summer hiatus during the weeks of August 10 and 17, returning Wednesday, August 26th. I wish you all a wonderful summer and will see you late August.

Five books by Bart Ehrman are being circulated as well as several by other authors. This discussion will probably continue through August. Please join us on Wednesday.

The Rev. John Schroeder is our preacher and worship leader today. He is a retired American Baptist Pastor who is now living in Northwood. His claim to fame in our congregation is that he is the father of Jo Chase.

Join friends, family, and church members for the 4th Annual NCC attendance at a NH Fishercats ballgame on Thursday, August 6th. This year we have an opportunity to be part of the pre-game, non-denominational faith discussion with a group of Fishercats in the baseball chapel. A group will leave from the NCC parking lot at 4:30pm, or you can meet us at the Box Office. Tickets are limited, so please sign up outside of Fellowship Hall to reserve your tickets.
