Sunday December 15 2024: Light In The Dark Of Winter with Live Fiddle Music

On the third day of Advent, we will have a wonderful musical service featuring two local professional musicians: Ellen Carlson and Todd Jones. The service will be somewhat centered on the Swedish Sankta Lucia day which is on December 13th each year. Being partially north of the arctic circle, Sweden is can be quite dark as Christmas approaches and this day is celebrated early in the morning with pleasing treats. You may have encountered images of young women with wreaths of candles in their hair; this is part of the custom of bringing light to an otherwise dark time.

Ellen Carlson (fiddle/vocals) and Todd Jones (guitar/banjo/vocals) are key members of the local band High Range which might be described as a "newgrass" band. They draw from bluegrass, swing, country and folk for a unique and pleasing sound. In addition Ellen's family has some Scandinavian heritage.

Join us after the service for coffee, traditional saffron rolls and other treats.

On November 24, 2024, the Sunday before Thanksgiving, the Northwood Congregational Church invites you to engage in true holiday spirit by attending its Make Room for Joy, Peace, and Thanksgiving concert, with nationally known songwriters and fiddler/guitar duo Joyce Andersen and Harvey Reid. They will perform a mix of wonderful, uplifting music and perhaps some holiday tunes as well.

The concert takes place from 4:00-6:00pm in our Sanctuary.

After 20 years as a fiddle sideman and singer-songwriter, playing in bluegrass, country, rock, celtic, jazz and folk ensembles, Joyce Andersen has boldly created a new body of music and a new musical standard for the unaccompanied fiddle troubadour. Recently she has been on a songwriting tear and several choirs, including Voices from the Heart, perform her songs.

Acoustic Guitar magazine called Harvey Reid "...one of the true treasures of American acoustic music, and one of his 32 recordings was the only album in the last 25 years to be selected in a list of Top 10 Folk CD's of all time. Guitar Player Magazine put him on their "desert island" CD list. He was the national fingerpicking champion and international autoharp winner, and Doc Watson took him to lunch to ask him how he played the 6-string banjo. Reid's songs have been recorded by dozens of artists, and he is one of the most respected and versatile songwriters and acoustic players on the scene.

Andersen & Reid will play solo sets and perform together, and will keep you on the edge of your seats with a special Sunday repertoire of old gospel songs, new spirituals and any other songs they see fit to play that fit into the spirit of the day. Expect slide guitar, dazzling fiddle, razor-sharp duet harmonies, guitar instrumentals, down-home bluegrass, and some rousing sing-a-longs.

A suggested donation of $20.00 from each attending adult.  Accompanied children are free. Any questions, please e-mail peggykofer@gmail.com
