Extravagant
Hospitality
During This Lent Season, we as a Church are going to attempt to practice the
text below. Write it on index cards, place them in your bathroom, car,
in your wallet, anywhere we will see it to help us remember to modify our
behavior. During Lent we will ask God to help us to be better at loving
as God loves. Let us begin the journey of Extravagant Hospitality
toward those we love in our own homes, workplace and the stranger on the
road, anywhere we encounter challenges. 40 days of intentional
Extravagant love. "Love endures with patience and
serenity (patience=long suffering}
Love is kind and
thoughtful and is not jealous
Love does not brag and
is not proud or arrogant
Love is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not provoked (easily angered)
it does not take into account wrong endured (keep record of wrong
toward us)
it does not rejoice at injustice but rejoices
with the truth" 1 Corinthians 13:4-6 (The Amplified)
Book Study!
We will be reading the book "Waking Up White by Debbie
Irving" We will be reading this book as a church during
the Lent Season and have small group discussion groups at different
times determined by a sign up sheet. Begins March 10th-First Sunday of
Lent. See Pastor Reneé for your book.
"Waking Up White is the book Irving wishes someone had handed her
decades ago. By sharing her sometimes cringe-worthy struggle to understand
racism and racial tensions, she offers a fresh perspective on bias,
stereotypes, manners, and tolerance. As Irving unpacks her own long-held beliefs
about colorblindness, being a good person, and wanting to help people of
color, she reveals how each of these well-intentioned mindsets actually
perpetuated her ill-conceived ideas about race. She also explains why and how
she's changed the way she talks about racism, works in racially mixed groups,
and understands the antiracism movement as a whole. Exercises at the end of
each chapter prompt readers to explore their own racialized ideas. Waking Up
White's personal narrative is designed to work well as a rapid read, a book
group book, or support reading for courses exploring racial and cultural
issues." (Goodreads)
