Advent Devotions: Advent is the Season of preparation for the Coming of Christ. We will be posting Advent Devotions on NCC’s website on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays at www.northwoodcongregational.org. Check them out and use them to help with your spiritual journey through Advent.

Advent Booklets: are now available on the table outside Fellowship Hall. These are for families to use as Daily Devotionals. This year’s booklet is filled with stories from people of faith in all times.

Christmas by Design: Many thanks to all who worked so hard to make Christmas by Design such a huge success. Fund-raisers are crucial to the financial well-being of the church and you all make them happen!

St. Paul’s: St. Paul’s School in Concord invites the public to its Annual Service of Lessons and Carols. It is held

Communion Offering: During this holiday season, the Northwood Congregational Church will be collecting for a variety of worthwhile causes. With the economic turmoil continuing to impact all of us, we understand this is a very challenging time for everyone. So let Christ guide you in what you can offer this holiday season whether it is your time to help others, your monthly mission offerings, gifts of food or goods, or any other support you can offer to those in need. We are providing some early information so you can plan your year-end giving to those in need as part of the Church Community. Christmas Baskets: As discussed above we will be food for the December Missions to help distribute 14 Christmas Baskets in coordination with the Diaconate. (Sign up sheet is inside Fellowship Hall.) Santa's Helpers: Get those needles clicking! Again this year, we will be participating in Santa's Helper in coordination with the Northwood Fire Department. In years past, we have been very successful in providing children's mittens and hats to distribute to needy families. Please pick some up as you shop this year as we know they get hard to find as winter approaches. We will begin collecting them in December. Christmas Gift Family in Need: We are currently working with our local community leaders to identify a family that we can provide assistance in the form of Christmas gift giving. We are currently reviewing appropriate Mission causes for the sharing of the donations from the Christmas Eve Church service. (Please note: when making checks to support Mission giving, make them payable to NCC, with Mission in the Memo section, so that the funds can be properly tracked and then allocated to that Mission.)

Gift Cards to Benefit NCC: NCC can easily make some extra money by selling gifts cards from major retailers. Here's how it works: let Pam English know which gift cards in what amounts you’d like to purchase, write a check out for that amount to Northwood Congregational Church and give it to Pam at church on Sundays (i.e.: JC Penny, Regal Cinemas). They will be processed on a weekly basis. You receive the gift card no more 10 days later, probably sooner. Our church gets a certain percent of the purchase, there’s no fee to you and in some cases there may even be a perk or two! Please see our church-wide e-mail for further detailed information and a list of participating retailers is available on the table outside of Fellowship Hall.

Christmas Caroling Coordinator: Could you please assist us in organizing a Christmas Caroling party for the church? Contact Gayle if you are interested.

Poinsettias for Christmas: Would you like to donate a plant for a shut-in or dedicate one for a loved one, etc. These would make for a lovely addition to our Christmas decorating for the celebration of the birth of Jesus. They will be placed in the sanctuary from December 13 through the 24th. Please contact Brenda Dunbar at 942-5954 to make arrangements to have them at the church and inform us as to your wish of giving them to a shut-in or taking care of the plant yourself.

Centering Prayer: You are all invited to a time of centering prayer every Wednesday at 8:00 am for 30 minutes. Jo Chase is hosting us in her home at 306 Catamount Road.

Advent Devotion - December 1, 2009

ADVENT DEVOTIONS
This is the first of our Advent devotions using our Website to connect with you all. There will be a new devotion every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and I hope it will become a part of your Advent ritual. In the midst of all that life is demanding of us, I trust that these devotions will be easy to access and will help you to make room for God in your holiday preparations.
For what we access in this devotional time is God. The God who comes into this world as an unassuming child. The God who overcame all in the resurrection of that child 33 years later. The God who guides us in the teachings of Jesus as he walked in our world between birth and death.
Setting aside time for God is far more important than setting aside time for all that needs to be done at this time of year. So do try to set aside the time to check into this blog and to pray. The hope is that you will then be aware of God’s presence with you as you shop, decorate, make gifts for our friends and family, and all the other important things that you do at this time of year. May you find God’s blessing in it all.

PRAYER: Gracious God, who in Your infinite patience, awaits us in this season of Advent. Let us breathe in Your spirit. Let us be guided by Your presence. Let us serve You in all we do in these days. We pray it in Jesus’s name. Amen.

Oct 2009 Missions

DEAR NORTHWOOD CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH MEMBERS AND FRIENDS:

The information below summarizes an upcoming mission opportunity and the results of our previous mission effort.

OCTOBER 2009 MISSION - STRAFFORD COUNTY HOMELESS SHELTER

The October Mission is the Strafford County Homeless Center in Rochester. SCHC is a local non-profit organization that has been operating for 10 years in a ranch style home donated by Waste Management. It is a cold shelter, meaning it is only opened from October through April for localhomeless families and single parents. Offering shelter, food, case management, love and support, its mission also links homeless individuals to community social services, employment opportunities, continued education, medical/legal services, drug and alcohol support services, and low-incomehousing possibilities. Funding for the Center is through local churches and private citizens, and relies on a volunteer-based staff pool. Your donations can be cash, supplies (i.e.: personal hygiene products, bedding, office supplies, ink cartridges, paper, postage stamps), or volunteer time for 5-6 hour shifts on weekends through the winter. Our own Jan Grande is the Shelter Director, so please contact her with any questions.

SEPTEMBER 2009 MISSION RESULTS - A LIGHT FOR ZIMBABWE & UCC UKAMA PARTNERSHIP

The Northwood Congregational Church membership and friends donated 9 boxes to "A Light forZimbabwe." In addition to personal donations of supplies, we purchased about $227 of items to supplement the shipments. As the attached photo shows, we collected and boxed 2 mountain bikes, medicine/first aid supplies/eyeglasses, library and text books, school supplies, paper, clothing, sewing items, and many other needed items. The boxes were delivered on October 2, 2009 to the gymnasium of New England Pentecostal Ministries in Pelham, NH (see photo of portion of boxes). These items will be put in a 40-foot long container box which will take about 8 weeks to arrive in Zimbabwe and hopefully all items will be distributed to their intended recipients by Christmas. Thanks to one particularly generous donor, we are also contributing $450 to "A Light for Zimbabwe" of which $150 is to be used for shipping and $300 to be used for other supplies for the Zamchiya Church and Mt. Selinda/Chikore Mission. We we also able to send a check for $510.87 to NH Council UCC to be distributed between Zamchiya Church and other designated UCCZ Ukama Partnershipchurches in Zimbabwe. We trust and pray that all these donations will be put to good use and reach their intended recipients. We are proud of what we have been able to do this year and thank the congregation for their generosity to meet the needs of our brothers and sisters in Zimbabwe for this important mission!

Our children are tending a garden in summer Sunday School. We still need adults and youth to help our children. There will be a sign-up outside of Fellowship Hall for you to sign up for one Sunday during the summer to help. We also need someone who will put up a fence around the garden to keep our neighborly critters from eating all the fruits of the children’s work.

7/26 Annnouncements

Our thanks go to Coe-Brown Academy for allowing us to worship in this beautiful place. This is land that the school owns and uses for its educational purposes and we are glad that they share it so willingly with us.

Thanks to all who have made this worship service possible. Our musicians are: Jo Chase, Kathy Conway and Thomas Masison. The Deacons have carried down chairs, helped to set up the worship space, welcomed you and done just about everything else to make this an effective worship service.

Gayle Murphy will be on vacation the next two weeks as her son gets married! Next week, Rev. John Schroeder will be our worship leader and preacher. On August 9, Neil English will be our lay preacher and worship leader. The Deacons will be on call for any emergencies and will check the phone daily. Please contact Jo Chase at 942.8940 or 545.4195 if there is an emergency and they will make sure you get the pastoral care you need.

This month The Missions Committee is asking the congregation to please contribute to the Cocheco Valley Humane Society during the month. All animal shelters are “bursting at the seams” with so many animals to care for at this time of economic upheaval. No longer is it just the stray animals being brought in but the beloved pets of owners who can no longer care for them. Thank you for your support and concern for these animals. “Until one has loved an animal, part of their soul remains unawakened.” ~Author unknown. (Please note: when making checks to support Mission giving, make them payable to NCC, with Mission in the Memo section, so that the funds can be properly tracked and then allocated to that Mission.)

July 19th Service

Good people of the Northwood Church,
I just want to let you know that Sunday I will preach on the popular book by William Young, entitled The Shack. It is an imaginative book about what it would be like to spend the weekend with God the Father/Mother, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. There has been a lot excitement about the book and a lot of criticism.
Even if you haven't read the book, the issues should be relevant to our understanding and relating to God.
May God bless you on this day,
Gayle Murphy

July 15th announcements

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Next Sunday, we will worship down at the Point on Harvey Lake. We are so blessed to have this place of beauty so easily accessible to us. Please plan to bring your own portable chair and dress according to the weather. If it is raining we will reschedule the service for later in August.

The Counted Cross-stitch Artwork that we are dedicating was done by Edna Irving, Marcia Severance’s Aunt. The picture of the Last Supper was framed by Marcia Severance and will hang just outside of the Sanctuary as you go out to the new part of the church. Edna made the cross-stitch as a Memorial to Evelyn and Perry Richardson because she knew that they loved this church. Evelyn Richardson is Edna’s sister and Marcia Severence’s Mother.

The number of people finding it necessary to use the Northwood Food Pantry continues to increase- a sure sign of the poor economic situation we are now experiencing. The season of Lent begins at the end of this month
with the observance of Ash Wednesday. This is a brief evening service on February 25th beginning at 7:00 which ushers us into the
penitent nature of Lent. It is a deeply moving service when the
ashes of humanity are placed upon our foreheads, we confess our
need for God’s presence and forgiveness in our lives, and wait for
the fulfillment of Lent in the miracle of Jesus’ resurrection on Easter.
The Lenten theme for the sermons during the course of the season will focus on
different ways that relationship with God is broken. We hope this theme will help each of
us identify with the different ways we have broken our relationship with God and will point
us to look into Biblical precedence for the estrangement from God and its answers of rec-
onciliation for us.

We will offer a class on Peace during this time; looking at the different forms of
peace; freedom from war, freedom from interpersonal conflict, spiritual peace, how to par-
ent your children in the ways of peace, and ways for us to be involved in bringing about
peace in our world. The classes will be held on Wednesday evenings beginning March 11, and
will begin with a pot-luck supper at 6:00, and the class beginning at 7:00-8:30.
We have some exciting events coming at the end of Lent with Palm Sunday, Maundy
Thursday, and Easter Sunday. This year we will be adding a Good Friday service which you
can attend for 30 minute segments during the late afternoon and early evening.
